There are not many places to eat and enjoy traditional Ghanaian food in Accra, even though many central hotels in the Greater Accra region serve traditional western fair with the mix of Ghanaian dishes thrown in. These places are normally frequented by holiday diners or locals on a night out with their partners or friends. However, Ghana is a place where you have to adventure and try the local food and not the food that has been modified for western tastes.

Over the years in Accra the government has worked hard to remove street food sellers in their attempt to regulate the food selling industry so you will be hard pushed to find someone selling fried rice, Waakey or Jalloff rice on the side of the street during the day unless you go to one of the many local markets. Around the beach area is where you might find locals selling local produce however, it is not till the sun comes down where traditional food sellers come out to really serve their wears.

If you search hard in the Accra mainly the Osu region you will find the occasional Kelewele seller. Kelewele is fried plantain seasoned with chilies and Ginger, it can either be server by itsself in paper or with ground nuts. The choice is up to you, but this dish is a must try once your in Ghana.

Another tip for eating in Ghana is to try and find the local "Chop Bar", chop bar is just a local name for restaurant. Chop bars are normally good places to eat that are frequented by everyone from a government minister to the local market trader or taxi driver. These restaurants server all the traditional Ghana foods in an atmosphere which is relaxing and enjoyable. If you want to try Fufu, Omo Tuo and Waakye these are the places to go.

Accra being the major city really does cater for its wealthy locals with a mixture of Chinese,Indian, Korean, Lebanese, Italian, and French, restaurants even Pizza delivery (dependent on our location). As well as American style diners such as Frankie's located in the famous Ghana Oxford Street, Osu. Frankie's is a an American style restaurant which also doubles up as a hotel. It’s a place frequented by the young ‘Accra set’ who's mums and dads either work in local or national government. So the venue can be classified as the hang out for the wealthy kids of Accra. So you will always spot some kind of minor celebrity hanging out at Frankie's.

Finally if you want something quick in Accra why not try many of the burger bars and even Nandos restaurants in the Greater Accra region if you can not resist the taste of Peri Peri chicken and fries with a cold coke.
